CommentsBetween November 1 and 4, southern British Columbia experienced a significant rain event. In North Vancouver, 228.7 mm of rain was recorded; 222.3 mm on November 2nd-3rd alone. The storm system caused flooding as well as landslides in the Vancouver area - North Vancouver and West Vancouver were particularly affected. The combination of flooding and landslides caused three of BC's main highways to be washed out as well as the derailment of a passenger and a freight train. Several communities were also evacuated as hundreds of homes and businesses were flooded - some were washed away. The silty floodwater waters also impacted salmon stocks and spawning grounds, particularly along the Squamish, Chehalis, Vedder and Chilliwack Rivers. On November 4th, 800 military personnel were deployed to help with the flood effort, and in total there were over 3,000 volunteers (fire fighters, police officers, Red Cross, Salvation Army, students, Scouts) who turned out in North Vancouver. The rain event also affected parts of Vancouver Island. It is estimated that this event caused an estimated $5 million in losses and an additional $3 million in potential losses to the salmon industry.
