CommentsIn the early hours of April 29th, a fire started in a stairwell of the Rossmore hotel in Cornwall, ON. At the time, there were about 60 guests in addition to staff in the hotel. Because the fire was accidentally started on the stairwell between the first 2 floors, this created a barrier for escape, and many guests jumped or climbed out of windows. Sadly, 10 individuals perished in the fire, while others sustained injuries from their burns or from jumping out of the hotel’s windows. The fire also destroyed several other businesses including the telegraph office, a jewelry store and the telephone company. The damage was estimated to be $250,000 (1910 CAD).
