CommentsSt. Lazare MB, July 9, 1991. 25 cars in an 88-car train jumped the tracks near the village of St. Lazare; two cars of acetic anhydride and two cars of methanol ruptured, causing a toxic cloud; 400 residents of St. Lazare were evacuated for 6 days. [The Environment Canada accident report states that respiratory masks were required in the contaminated area, reservoirs to confine the waste were dug, the crops within 200 m were contaminated with acetic vapours, and 500 people were deprived of water for 2 days]
