Comments | At 8:23pm (local) on February 2st, a freight train derailed as it was preparing to leave from the Red Deer train yard. As a result, 5 tank cars derailed; 2 of which overturned and 1 leaked its entire contents - 71.74 tonnes of anhydrous ammonia. Approximately 1,300 local residents and businesses were evacuated for 37.5 hours. Anhydrous ammonia is exceptionally harmful and 34 individuals were treated and released from hospital over exposure concerns. One individual, however, died as a result of inhaling these chemicals. |
