Comments | On October 20th, a storm that was expected to pass along the coast of Cape Breton unexpectedly tracked over the region. The temperature and wind fluctuated throughout the morning and early afternoon, and by 3:00pm the storm was at its peak. At this time, the winds were blowing at over 85 km/hr with gusts of 137 km/hr. Cape Breton was widely impacted; however, Sydney was particularly affected. Throughout the community, 42 trees were uprooted, several of which were blocking streets. Roofs were blown off which led to the evacuation of an area of the community. As a result of the storm, 1,500 homes were damaged, 33 families were displaced, and 5 individuals were injured. |
