CommentsA large winter storm with high winds, heavy snow and ice accumulation affected parts of southern Ontario and southern Quebec. Billy Bishop Airport on Toronto Island reported winds of 96 km/hr, while Wiarton Airport reported 40 cm of snow, and London International Airport received 14 hours of freezing rain and ice pellets. Several large buildings were damaged when sheets of ice fell from neighbouring buildings – Parliament building windows were broken in Ottawa, and falling ice from the CN tower pierced the Rogers Centre Dome. Roughly 1,800 car accidents were reported including a 50-car pileup on Highway 400 near Barrie. There were over 15,000 insurance claims and $190 million in insured losses.
