British commercial attaché James Cross was kidnapped by the FLQ (Front de libération de Québec); encouraged by their success, the FLQ then kidnapped Québec Minister of Labour and Acting Premier Pierre Laporte on Oct. 10,1970; Laporte was murdered on Oct. 17,1970; in response, the federal government implemented the War Measures Act; Cross was held for 59 days and then released after negotiations which resulted in his kidnappers being allowed to leave the country. |
